welcome

Kathleen T. Costigan, 96, of Shrewsbury went home to God on March 21, 2016 between her high holiday of St. Patrick's Day, the first day of spring, her birthday, and Easter. She was born the third of seven children to Irish immigrant parents Francis H. and Mary Sheridan Ward.

Kay was a most compassionate and competent nurse who worked at Massachusetts General and Boston Children Hospitals. She served, along with all of her siblings, in World War II as a charter member of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp.

She married another navy veteran in 1947 and enjoyed 53 wonderful years of marriage to Joseph G. Costigan. They moved to NJ in 1955 and enjoyed their lives running a business, traveling the world, playing golf, and making dear and lasting friends. She certainly had the luck of the Irish and used it well at Monmouth Race Track and Atlantic City.

Kathleen was the matriarch of her extensive clan and was beloved as a sister, wife, mother, aunt, and dear friend. She had a terrific sense of humor and kept everyone on their best behavior including her son Thomas (deceased 2011); her daughter Kathleen and husband Frank; her grandsons Brian and wife Amanda; Riley and wife Fabiana; Kevin and wife Emily; Timothy and fiance Jenny; Michael and wife Nicole; Brian and wife Tami; and granddaughter Kalene and husband Matt.

Nana, who never met a child she did not instantly love, was blessed with nine great grandchildren: Matt, Colby, Olivia, Patrick, Paola, Julia, Thomas, Quinn, and Owen. She made dear friends too in the last years of her life in Emmanuel, Hilda, and Belinda.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart School, 1739 Ferry Avenue, Camden, NJ 08104.

Do a jig for us in Heaven, Kay, and sing Molly Malone.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 23rd from noon to 1 p.m., with a funeral service at 1 p.m., at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St, Red Bank. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown.
