Bob Nelson passed away on April 3, 2016. He was born in Elizabeth, NJ. At age 18 he joined the elite Navy SeaBees as a hardhat salvage and rescue diver during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged in 1954, he joined the Elizabeth Fire Department where he served for 25 years before retiring in 1986. Being good with his hands, he could build or fix anything and soon after retiring from the fire department, Bob became a proficient and accomplished carpenter, locksmith and plumber.

Bob loved the outdoors and had a deep understanding of weather and ocean conditions. He expressed this knowledge as a fisherman, pilot, boater, and as a camper.

Bob and his loving wife of 48 years, Phyllis, enjoyed many adventures together, traveling all over the US, Canada and the Caribbean.

Mr. Nelson loved his family and is survived by his wife Phyllis, his sons Ron and his wife Cheryl, Jim and his wife Leeanne, his youngest son Robbie and his daughter Laura. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Archer and sister Frances. Sadly he was predeceased by his brothers Harvey Nelson and Richard Nelson as well as his sisters Eleanor Gallagher, Jackie Marsden and Frances Sylvester.

Visitation will be on Thursday, April 7th from 5 to 8 pm at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St, Red Bank. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 8th at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church of Rumson, 4 East River Rd, Rumson. At the request of Mrs. Nelson, and in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local volunteer fire department or toward Alzheimer's research.
