Joseph John Sergewich

Joseph John Sergewich, born February 28, 1922 in Union Beach, NJ to John and Stella Sergewich, passed on Christmas Day at the age of 101. He was one of the last surviving veterans of WWII. As a member of the 77th infantry, he crossed the Pacific, fighting in major battles on Guam, the Philippine islands and Okinawa. He received the Bronze Star Medal and many campaign ribbons for his bravery, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Returning to Shrewsbury, NJ after the war he married Etta nee Etta Thorne. He also got his first and only job at New Jersey Bell Telephone Company earning $25 a week. He retired in 1983 after 37 years of service advancing to Supervisor of the linemen.

Joe and Etta lived in their first house on Monroe Ave, moving after 2 years in 1952, to their last home on Beechwood Dr. in Shrewsbury. Joe was an active person his whole life, having lived through the most eventful century in history. He loved to garden, bowl and hunt while fishing was his forte. He volunteered in the community coaching baseball and as a Scout leader. He was honored in 2021 by a proclamation of the Shrewsbury Boro Council.

Complications from the covid vaccine at age 99 forced him to need additional help. Thanks to Sunrise Assisted Living in Shrewsbury for helping him through his last 2 years.

Joseph was one of 7 siblings. Brothers Stanley, Leo and Alex Durko. Sisters Helen Greschuck, Alice Flynn and Florence Sica.

Surviving are his son and wife Joseph W. and Gail, his grandson and wife Joseph W. and Stephanie and his great grandchildren Autumn and Logan.

Graveside service on Jan. 3,2024 at 11am located at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers (t2t.org).
