Barbara G. Shannon

Barbara G. Shannon (nee Galvin) passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2024. She was born in Jersey City, NJ and resided in Wanamassa, NJ for the past 49 years. Barbara spent her childhood in Jersey City NJ . She was born to the late Cyril Jerome and Veronica Teresa (nee Lawlor) Galvin on August 21, 1936, in Jersey City. Barbara graduated from St. Michael’s High School, Jersey City in 1954 and received a BA at Lady Cliff College, Highland Falls, NY in 1958. 

She married the late Major John D. Shannon (US Army) in 1959. They lived the Army life staying in Georgia, Germany, California, and Texas, and finally calling Wanamassa, NJ their home for the last 49 years. 

She is predeceased by her husband, John D. Shannon, by her parents, Cyril Jerome and Veronica Galvin, her brothers, Cyril Jerome Jr., Dennis, John and her sister, Mary Jane Galvin. She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bender, Mrs. Patrick Kenny (Alice), Mrs. Douglas Johnson (Patricia), Mrs. James Lindemon (Veronica) and her brother Thomas Galvin and his wife Ann. 

Barbara was a caring mother, devoted to her children. She is survived by her three children John Dennis and his partner, Robin Ellis, Kevin Patrick and his wife, Kristin, and her daughter, Kathleen Moira. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicholas, Sam, Bridget, Maggie, Jack Shannon, and Jillian and Shannon Kasun, and her great grandchildren Mackenzie and Rowan Shannon. Along with many nieces and nephews. 

Barbara enjoyed reading, nature, baking and sparkling. She was a proud working mother and was the store manager at Steinbach, and Bontons of Bricktown, NJ, for over 20 years. Above all else , she treasured her family and hosted many get-togethers on her dock in her lakeside home. Please join us in celebrating Barbara‘s life by wearing bright attire.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 31st from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 10 am at Church of the Precious Blood, 72 Riverdale Ave, Monmouth Beach, NJ 07750. Burial will follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, Wall Twp, NJ. In lieu of flowers, you may want to donate in Barbara‘s name to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital and the Wounded Warrior Project.
