Joan Elizabeth Horan

Joan Elizabeth Horan

Joan Elizabeth Horan, nee Hanley, went to her reward Sunday, May 26, 2024. Joan was born in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, February 14, 1931 to Mary, nee Keenan, and Thomas C. Hanley, Irish immigrants. Joan grew up in Blessed Sacrament Parish, made friends, rode the subway, bought a car, went to Rockaway Beach, worked in child welfare, and met Vincent, also a first-generation Irish American.

They married, had a daughter Margaret Mary (Peggy) and moved to Hazlet New Jersey. Their new home brought life-long friends and three more children: James in 1957, Thomas in 1962 and Marikate (Katie) in 1970.  Her beloved sister, Patricia McCarthy, and family lived across the street. Vincent died in 1984. Life began again for Joan, working in various Hazlet Township positions including as an elected official on the Hazlet Township Council Committee, and directorships at the Hazlet Swim Club and Hazlet Sewage Utility, before moving on to a clerk position at the county seat in Freehold, New Jersey.

Joan’s grandchildren, Jack, Quinn, and Vincent were blessed to have had their Nan present in the totality of their young lives. Joan’s best moments were when she was with her family and her friends - laughing, singing, dancing. She adored us all. Joan traveled her beloved United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Russia, in the best company and with happy stories from each adventure.
