Elizabeth Stewart Tanis

Elizabeth Stewart Tanis, age 91, of Lincroft, NJ passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at home peacefully with her family by her side. She was born July 26, 1933 in her family home to Leslie and Margret Stewart, as the 106th resident born in Lincroft.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, of 65 years, and her two sisters and brother. As a child she received many awards for her animals at the Fair and Pet Show held at Brookdale Farms in Lincroft. She was most proud of her first-place award that was pinned on by Eleanor Roosevelt with a “Wilke” button.

She graduated from Red Bank High School after which she attended Monmouth Junior College, where she met the love of her life, Frederick J. Tanis Sr of Ocean Grove. After Monmouth Junior college, she attended Upsala College, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Elizabeth married Frederick in 1959 then resided in Eatontown till 1975 when she moved back to her family home in Lincroft, which her father built in 1927.

Elizabeth taught in Fairview Elementary School in Middletown for a few years before having children and moving to the Eatontown school system where she retired after 34 years. She was an active member of the Red Bank United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her two sons Frederick Jr and Stephen, four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Frederick III, Mary, and Katie, and four great-grandchildren, Noah, Gwendolyn, Malia, and Korinne and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 2nd from 4-7 pm at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at 11 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown, NJ.

Donations may be made in memory of Elizabeth to the United Methodist Church of Red Bank, 247 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
