It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ted Leddy, 87, a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend to many. Ted was born in Red Bank on May 10, 1937 to the late Edward and Dorothy (Cooper). He was raised in Red Bank and took great pride in his father’s business, Leddy’s Market. He attended Red Bank Catholic where he cherished playing on the 1955 undefeated state champion football team. Ted went on to graduate from Villanova University in 1959 with a degree in engineering, and was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Pi fraternity.
Ted and his wife, Patricia, raised their four children in Rumson, NJ. He made the long drive daily to Wayne, NJ, where he worked as an electrical engineer at Kearfott for 40 years. He also enjoyed his weekend job for many years at Cerlione’s Lawn and Garden in Middletown, NJ. After living in Rumson, Ted spent years in Red Bank and North Jersey before settling into his special home at Arbor Terrace in Middletown, where he spent the last 17 years surrounded by so many wonderful people.
Ted devoted countless hours over the years coaching many baseball and basketball teams within the Rumson recreational programs. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his neighbors and the neighborhood gatherings on Washington Street. Showcasing his athletic skills by playing for various town softball teams brought him great pride over the years, along with the joy of watching his children excel on the fields and courts at Forrestdale and Rumson-Fair Haven High School. In his later years, he could be seen cheering for his grandchildren across many sports and performances.
Up until the very end, Ted remained a devoted fan of Villanova basketball, the RBC Caseys, and the New York Mets. He treasured his long enduring friendships of 65-70 years with friends from RBC and Villanova. After Mass at St. James, he always took great pride in visiting the plaque honoring his 1955 RBC Hall of Fame team. Ted had a generous heart and an infectious smile that could light up a room, and his Catholic faith was a strong guide throughout his life. His love of listening to music, his joyful spirit and resounding laugh, will live in the memories of those who were blessed to know him.
He is survived by his sister, Joan, and brother-in-law, Ted Maione, of Long Branch, NJ, as well as his loving children: Cheryl Kelly (Chris) of Shrewsbury, NJ; Edward (Laurie) of Ponte Vedra, FL; Pamela of Jacksonville, FL; and Patrick (Deborah) of Westfield, NJ. He was affectionately known as Pop Pop to his grandchildren, Tom, Connor, Hannah, Bridget, Tim, Ryan, Payton, and Taylor, as well as to his many nieces and nephews.
