Marie F. Cottrell

Marie F. Cottrell

Marie F. Cottrell, 90, of Rumson, died peacefully on December 26, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones following a life devoted to her family, friends, and community.

Born in Brownsville, Texas, Marie was one of eight children, lovingly known as the “peacemaker” in the family which, along with traditional social graces, endeared her to all who knew her. Marie married her lifelong partner, James H. Cottrell, in 1954 and followed her husband wherever his work took the family from North Carolina to Louisiana and Alberta, Canada before ultimately settling in Rumson, NJ in 1964 near James’ familial roots.

A woman of deep faith, Marie was an active member of Holy Cross Church where she served as a lector, President of the Altar Guild and a member of the long-range planning committee. She also led the popular Rumson Antiques Show fundraiser for many years. Marie additionally supported the greater community through her volunteer work on the Rumson Historic Preservation Commission and the Monmouth Historical Association Board.

A lifetime member of Rumson Garden Club, Marie held nearly every Board position, including President. Marie received the Club Appreciation Award from the Rumson Garden Club and the prestigious Medal of Merit from the Garden Club of America citing her powerful & inspirational drive, commitment to selflessness and zeal as a long-time member and leader. Her passion for orchids and talent for nurturing them was well known among her friends and family.

Not surprisingly, Marie fully enjoyed the social aspects of the Rumson Country Club and Seabright Beach Club, where she and her husband were long-time members. She also devoted her time serving significant tenures on the Board of Governors of each Club. Notably, Marie chaired the Bridge Committee for many years for which she was a competitive participant and advocate for the game.

In her leisure time, Marie savored travel opportunities with her husband and children, including attending her family reunions held every three years since 1976, where her passion for music and family was shared with everyone. Marie was also an ardent  Yankees fan and rarely missed a game, whether watching on TV, attending in person or listening to the radio as she fell asleep. She also cherished annual trips to Princeton football games, allowing her to reminisce on the early years of their marriage spent at Princeton while her husband completed his college education.

Marie is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, James H. Cottrell, and survived by her four children, James H. Cottrell, Jr. (Melissa) of Brunswick, ME, Craig T. Cottrell (Lori) of Glastonbury, CT, Christiane C. McNamara (Doug) of Fair Haven, NJ and Stephen O. Cottrell (Cathy) of Rumson, NJ; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Most of all, Marie’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her children and husband unconditionally and cherished her grandchildren. Her strength, compassion and loving spirit were an inspiration. In her own words, Marie had “the fullest life any woman can have”.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 2nd at 10 am at Holy Cross Church, 30 Ward Ave, Rumson, NJ 07760. Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Marie to Lunch Break, 121 Dr. James Parker Blvd, Red Bank, NJ 07701. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Memorial Home of Red Bank, NJ.
