James Edward Hintelmann passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025 at the age of 86. One of four brothers, Jim was born in Red Bank, New Jersey to Lavinia and Joseph P. Hintelmann on March 27,1938. He graduated from Saint James Elementary School and Red Bank Catholic High School (Class of ‘56). He continued his education at Monmouth University and later became a journalist. Jim was a sports writer with a passion for writing about local high school sports, especially his alma mater, Red Bank Catholic.
Jim worked for several local newspapers including the Ocean County Observer, the Red Bank Register and most recently, the Two River Times. In 2013 he was honored with the Shore Athletic Club Media Achievement Award. He wrote about so many local high school games and athletes, and had an amazing memory for statistics. He could recite the statistics of athletes over many decades, and loved talking about memorable games. Jim was a big professional baseball fan and loved the Red Sox. He also had a great love for the weather, and was fascinated by storms and natural disasters. He loved nothing more than a good snowstorm. Jim was a communicant of Saint James Roman Catholic Church.
Jim was predeceased by his parents Joseph P. and Lavinia Hintelmann and his older brothers Joseph, Paul and Thomas and sister-in-law Maureen. He is survived by his nephews Tom Hintelmann and wife Mindy of Tinton Falls, Richard Hintelmann of Pensicola, Florida and his niece Nancy Murphy and husband Sean of Red Bank. He is also survived by great-nephews Sean, Matthew, Thomas and Michael and great-nieces Kaitlin and Katherine.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 11:00 am at Saint James Roman Catholic Church, 94 Broad Street, Red Bank. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown, NJ. Thompson Memorial Home of Red Bank has been entrusted with the arrangements.
