Mary E. Krugh, 89, of Tinton Falls, passed away peacefully after a long and blessed life. She was among the luckiest of people, having married the love of her life, Bob Krugh, in 1965 before becoming the mother of three girls and stepmother to a wonderful son, who gave her 12 grandchildren and a beautiful great-granddaughter. Mary was an accomplished seamstress all of her life, learning at her talented mother’s knee, and passing on that skill to her children and grandchildren. Mary enjoyed drawing and painting, difficult Sudoku puzzles, reading, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family. She was a devoutly faithful person, spending many decades as a parishioner at St. Catharine’s in Holmdel, NJ, before her move to Tinton Falls, where she attended mass at St. James and St. Anthony in Red Bank.
Mary was born in Jersey City, NJ, where her father worked as a shipbuilder and her mother as a seamstress. The oldest daughter and third of five children, she enjoyed an active youth living mostly in Belmar. She attended St. Catherine’s and St. Rose, and then won a scholarship to attend Georgian Court College, graduating with honors. Mary worked at the telephone company in Asbury Park during high school and college, and after graduation, she worked at Prudential in Newark, NJ. She then took a job at Fort Monmouth in Eatontown, and it was there that she met Bob. He was the dashing manager of the Officer’s Club, and she was the pretty secretary to the Commanding General, and at first sight, she couldn’t stand him. Luckily, that impression changed when he showed up at her office, looking bandbox fresh as she liked to say, and swept her off her feet. They married on New Year’s Eve in 1965, and welcomed three girls over the next few years - Mary in 1966, Trish in 1968 and Karen in 1970.
They moved to Middletown in 1966 and settled in their beloved home on Tall Tree Road in 1971. They enjoyed so many wonderful times there, hosting Christmas parties, sledding down the street, and swimming in the pool, custom decorated by Mary and her girls in later years so that it felt like you were hanging out under the sea with the little mermaid. Mary and Bob enjoyed travelling in motorhomes over the years and they spent the month of January with the girls at Disney World for many years. Later in life, they took weeks-long journeys across the US in the motorhome, and the joke was that she drove about five feet during each trip - just enough to back the RV onto leveling blocks at the campsite! They loved those trips and the sweet memories they collected.
After Bob passed in 2010, Mary moved briefly to Holmdel and then to Tinton Falls, where she spent her last few years under the loving care of the team at Arbor Terrace. She spent time in the art room, enjoyed trivia nights, and sang along with the entertainers in the atrium there, most recently at the Grandparents Day party where her great-granddaughter, Marlis, helped to provide entertainment for all by dancing along to all the songs.
The hardest time in Mary’s life was the loss of her beloved husband, Bob. Although he had been gone for 15 years, she mourned him every day and truly never stopped loving that exceptional man she married. Mary was predeceased by her wonderful parents, Mike and Mary Keane, about whom she asked nearly every day for the last several weeks of her life. Her brothers, Steve, John, and Tommy also predeceased her, as did her sisters-in-law Joyce and Anne. Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Hussey, and her children Mara Hussey, her husband John Morrison and their daughter Marlis, and Erin Hussey and her boyfriend Greg Dillow; Trish Welch and her husband Gene and their daughters Elizabeth and Mary Kate; Karen McClelland and her husband Michael and their children Robert, Maggie, Thomas, Aidan, Katie and Nathaniel; and her son John, his wife Diane and their children Neil and his wife Michelle, and Sandra and her husband Tim. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret, and her husband Bill, and her 19 nieces and nephews and their families.
Mary’s family has so many doctors, nurses and carers to thank for their love and care for her throughout her years, including but not limited to Dr. Stephen Jurewicz, Meghan Kasel, Dr. Kenneth Grossman, Dr. Christine Schaefer, Dr. Anthony Gurriero, Dr, Tara Mango, Dr. Mark Biebel, Dr. Mark DeCotiis, Dr. Arthur Mark, the staff at Harbor Dental and the entire staff of Arbor Terrace Shrewsbury. Our thanks, too, to the emergency room and hospice staff at Jersey Shore Medical, who made our last unbearable days a little easier.
