With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mom, Joan Angela Sciortino (LaViola), age 87, on June 7, 2026. Our Mom was a true warrior, battling cancer for over 12 years with unwavering courage and grace. Never giving up, always fighting; the strongest person we have ever known. She was the heart of our family, known for her warm heart, kindness, generosity and tireless dedication to her family.
Joan was born in Jersey City on December 14, 1938 to her late parents D. Richard and Josephine LaViola. Her family settled in Highlands and then Atlantic Highlands. Together with her late husband Philip, she helped establish the family business (Tackle Box Inc.) while raising 5 children.
Our mom loved nothing more than feeding her family and friends, and would not take no for an answer when offering a meal. She fed you whether you wanted something or not. Her grandchildren even named their Fantasy Football League "No Thanks Mimi, I'm Not Hungry". Established in 2013 - it will now and forever keep alive the memory of their beloved grandmother.
Joan is survived by her loving children Donna, Dawn, Felicia (Brian), Philip (Kate) and Nicole (Michael); her 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, and her sister Barbara and brothers Michael and John.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 15th at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 141 Navesink Ave, Highlands, NJ 07732. A Memorial Visitation will be held at the church from 10-11 am prior to the mass. Interment will be private.
