Thomas F. Hornung

Thomas Francis Hornung passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on August 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of honor, hard work, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born in East Orange, New Jersey, Tom was one of three children born to Andrew F. Hornung and Mae Ridge. From an early age, he possessed a strong sense of duty and patriotism. While still in high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country with distinction.

During his time in the Navy, Tom met the love of his life, Gloria, while home on leave. Their chance meeting blossomed into a lifelong love story. After completing his military service, Tom returned to New Jersey, married Gloria, and together they began their life in Morris Plains, where he became a loving husband and devoted father to Louise Palmieri. He later joined Ironworkers Local 11, building a respected career spanning more than 30 years. The family eventually settled in Tinton Falls, where Tom and Gloria spent the last 35 years creating a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Tom enjoyed many passions throughout his life. He loved spending afternoons at the horse racing track, appreciating both the excitement of the races and the camaraderie they brought. A voracious reader, he especially enjoyed action fiction and CIA thrillers, always eager to dive into a captivating story. Golf was perhaps his greatest passion. Whether he was playing a round, watching a tournament, or reading about the game's history and greatest players, Tom's enthusiasm for golf never waned and you would often find a club in his hand. Those who knew him will also remember his wonderful sense of humor. He loved to laugh, tell a good story, and bring smiles to those around him.

Above all else, Tom was devoted to his wife and family. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud uncle, and a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, Jim, Sharon, Peter, and Gloria, and found tremendous joy in his great-grandchildren, Peter Jr. and Michael, who lovingly called him "Pa." Being their Pa was one of the greatest blessings of his later years. His quiet strength, steady guidance, generous heart, and unwavering love left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave as "Pa" will remain in their hearts forever.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, his loving daughter, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory.

Tom lived a life defined by integrity, service, humility, and dedication. His example reminds us that a life well lived is measured not by accolades, but by the love we give, the family we cherish, and the lives we touch.

Visitation and services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Thompson Memorial Home in Red Bank, New Jersey, followed by entombment at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport, New Jersey.
