Alfred Ludlow Ferguson III, a longtime resident of Rumson and Fair Haven, New Jersey, passed away on August 17, 2026, in Neptune, New Jersey. He was born in New York, New York, on October 9, 1936.
Mr. Ferguson graduated from The Hotchkiss School in 1954 and Yale University in 1958. He served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander from 1958 to 1960 and later graduated from Yale Law School. He went on to practice law and retired in 2006 as a senior partner at McCarter & English LLP.
A consummate waterman, Alfred loved sailing, fishing, surfing, boating, and scuba diving. He was deeply connected to Fishers Island, New York, a place that held a special place in his heart.
Alfred was also a dedicated volunteer and philanthropist, generously supporting many causes, including education, environmental preservation, and community support and development. His commitment to helping others and strengthening the communities he cared about was an enduring part of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Ann Posey Ferguson; his son, Alfred L. Ferguson IV; his daughter, Posey Ferguson Miller; his sister, Joan Ellis; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred L. Ferguson Jr. and Janet Kinney Ferguson, and his daughter, Fall Ferguson.
Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his devotion to those he loved, his distinguished career, his generosity, and his lifelong passion for the water.
A celebration of Alfred’s life will be held at Sea Bright Beach Club on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. Thompson Memorial Home of Red Bank, NJ has been entrusted with the arrangements.
