Isabel “Ibby” Hertz, 91, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, surrounded by family. Known affectionately as “Nanny” to her 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, Ibby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of her community.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Isabel Morrell Waud and Dr. Sydney P. Waud, Ibby was the eldest of three children. She attended Miss Porter’s School and Bryn Mawr College before marrying Richard Hurd III, with whom she had four sons. Following Richard’s untimely death at age 39, Ibby raised their boys with remarkable grace and grit. In April 1970, she married Daniel Hertz Jr., creating the tight-knit Hurd-Hertz family, the epicenter of her life.
For more than 60 years, Ibby was an active member of the Rumson Garden Club, serving in leadership roles and sharing her lifelong passion for gardening. She was a devoted member of All Saints Church, where she led the Altar Guild, and took great pride in her leadership role at Red Bank Charter School. She cherished her many years at the Seabright Beach Club, Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club and Rumson Country Club. Through these communities, she cultivated lifelong friendships and remained a beloved and enthusiastic presence. An avid tennis player, she continued playing well into her 80s.
Ibby was happiest surrounded by those she loved, hosting legendary holiday celebrations, welcoming family and friends at family homes on the Navesink (NJ) or the Neversink (NY), or sharing her wisdom and unmistakable sense of humor. She had an extraordinary gift for making others feel welcomed, remembered, and loved. As her beloved husband Dan often said, “She expects a lot because she gives so much.” It was a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman whose generosity, strength, and love shaped generations.
Predeceased by her husbands, Richard Hurd III and Daniel Hertz Jr., and brother Alfred Beadleston, Ibby is survived by her siblings, Beverly Sutherland, Sydney Waud, and William Beadleston; her eight children and their spouses: Richard and Kara Hurd, Lauri and Michael Boyle, David Hurd, Suki Hertz and Michael Hagerty, Daniel and Pam (Wilson) Hertz, Bruce and Lucy Hurd, Seana and Tyson Pritchard, and Benjamin and Samantha Hurd.
Funeral Services will be held privately at All Saints Church, Highlands, NJ In lieu of flowers, all donations should be sent to All Saints Church (Navesink, NJ 07752), in her name.
Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
