Carol Ann Moran nee Cunningham, 82, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, peacefully at home in Ocean Township. She was a three-time breast cancer survivor and fought her final battle courageously to the end. Carol was born in Bronxville, New York, and lived in Oceanport for 30 years before moving to Ocean Township. Carol was a devout parishioner of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in West End.
Carol was a 1956 graduate of Mount Saint Vincent College. She worked briefly for Rockefeller & Co. in NYC before marrying her college sweetheart and starting her family. She was an indomitable matriarch and considered her three children and one grandchild to be her greatest accomplishments; they in turn attribute much of their own success to her healthy and consistent doses of good old-fashioned Irish guilt (and wisdom). Carol’s life was made complete when she became a grandmother in 1998. Granddaughter Kate was the apple of both Carol and her husband’s eye and will forever be “loved to the moon and back.”
Always at the center of what was happening, Carol was considered the “cruise director” among those who were lucky enough to know and love her. Whatever it was -- be it enjoying summers at Peninsula House or throwing legendary parties at her home on Burnt Mill Circle -- Carol liked to be surrounded by friends and was known for her quick wit. She was a mother to many “adopted children” over the years, with whom she shared her capable, strong and honest affections. Carol was an ardent sports lover, and for 58 years was a season ticket holder of her beloved New York Giants. She had hoped not to be disappointed yet again this season.
She is predeceased by her parents, Edward and Marion (Igoe) Cunningham; her husband Robert whom she was married to for 52 years upon his passing; her beloved daughter Cathleen; her son-in-law Michael Elisha; and her brother J.J. Cunningham. Surviving are her devoted children, son Tod Moran of Monmouth Beach, N.J. and daughter Patti Moran of Highlands N.J. and Evanston, Ill.; her brother Edward I. Cunningham of Palm Beach, Fla; and her cherished granddaughter Kate Elisha of Evanston, Illinois and the University of Miami.
A visitation will be held at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701, on May 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, West End, NJ on May 22 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Carol’s memory to Camp Kesem (Miami chapter, in care of Kate Elisha), an organization driven by passionate college student leaders that support children through and beyond their parent’s cancer at campkesem.org or via mail 10586 W. Pico Blvd., #196 Los Angeles, CA 90064.
