David Dudley Smith Sr. peacefully passed away at home in Monmouth Beach, NJ on July 31 at the age of 94. He was born on September 28, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY. David attended Lehigh University, during which time he enlisted in the Navy. He served on a Destroyer Escort during WWII in the North Atlantic. After the war David returned to Lehigh, earning a degree in Industrial Engineering. Upon graduating, he worked as a Sales Engineer for Westinghouse.
In 1949, David married Betty Loomis. They moved to Staten Island and had their three children, David Jr., Kathryn and Gwendolyn. David worked in the steel industry at the same company for 50 years. He served on the boards of the YMCA, Salvation Army, Staten Island Zoo, Emmanuel Union Church, and was a member at Richmond County Country Club.
David was active in politics and was elected to the New York City Council in 1965. In 1966, he was elected to the Board of Directors of Northfield Savings Bank. David was a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served as President of the National Association of Aluminum Distributors and as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Steel Service Institute.
In 1976 David and Betty moved to Rumson, NJ where Tower Hill Prewsbyterian Church played an important role in their lives. David served three terms as an elder, sang in the choir for many years, and made many great friends. Root Beer and Checker Club as a source of joy. David loved sailing, tennis, golf, and traveling. He and his wife, Betty, took over 50 cruises together before her passing in 2006.
David was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Dudley & Emma Smith, his wife Betty, his sister Anne Falevsky, her husband Harlow, and his son David Jr. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Kathryn and Matthew Singleton of Greenwich, CT, Gwendolyn and Michael Ellithorpe of Middletown, NJ, and former daughter-in-law, Jean Smith of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, as well as seven grandchildren, their respective spouses and four beautiful great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Tower Hill Presbyterian Church, Red Bank, NJ on Monday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to come and celebrate the life of David.
