Luis Antonio Ortiz

WWII and Korean War Veteran, International Executive, Loving Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather

Luis Antonio Ortiz, 99 of Fair Haven, NJ, passed away on July 12, 2020 of natural causes.

Luis was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico and came to the United States as a teenager. His military service began in August of 1943 in the United States Marine Corps. He served in both WWll and the Korean War. Luis completed his service and was honorably discharged in September of 1951.

Sarah J. Winmill

Sarah J. Winmill died on July 8, 2020 at the age of 89. She grew up in New York City and Bernardsville, NJ and was a longtime resident of Rumson, NJ. She descended from the Lee and Page families of Virginia, the Jones family of Savannah, GA and the Post family of New York.

She was married for 58 years to the late Bassett S. Winmill. She is survived by her children Mrs. Starr Winmill Shebesta of Maineville, OH, Mark C. Winmill of Millerton, NY, and Thomas B. Winmill of Walpole, NH. She also leaves two grandsons, William M. Winmill and Woodworth B. Winmill, and a granddaughter Georgia B. Winmill.

Frederick Johnson Tanis Sr.

Frederick Johnson Tanis Sr., 84 of Lincroft, passed away Sunday, July 12, 2020, at home peacefully with his family by his side. He was born 1935 in Phillipsburg, NJ, to the Reverend John and Bertha Tanis. Fred was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

He moved from Phillipsburg to Moosic, PA and then to Ocean Grove at a young age. He graduated from Neptune High School after which he attended Monmouth Junior College, where he met the love of his life Elizabeth Ann Stewart of Lincroft. After Monmouth Junior college, he continued his education at Trenton State College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Fred taught Industrial Arts in Long Branch High school for 4 years while also running a sign shop. He owned and operated Photo Art Stencil and Sign Company for over 50 years in Oakhurst and then Lake Como, NJ. He retired from the business he loved a few years ago.

Margaret Frances DeGeorge (“nee” Schanck)

Margaret Frances DeGeorge (nee Schanck), 91, left us peacefully on July 3, 2020 in Toms River. She is predeceased by her husband, Herman, sister Eleanor and daughter-in-law Nancy DeGeorge. “Marge” was born on April 17, 1929 in Red Bank, grew up there and attended Red Bank High School. She has resided in Toms River for the past two years.

In 1950, Marge married Herman DeGeorge and was married for 35 years. She was a loving mother to Mary, Patty, Howard and Louis; a loving mother-in-law to John, Dennis, Susan; a loving grandmother to Justin, Nicole Sauer, Benjamin, Brian, Michelle, Nicole DeGeorge; a loving great-grandmother to Nora and Will.

Marge happily spent the greater part of her life as a homemaker raising her children in Lincroft and being there for every one of their life milestones. After raising her children and helping to prepare them for life, Marge started working for Delicious Orchards in 1967. She worked there for 25 years both in the packing plant and the bakery in Colts Neck.

Sally L. Evans

Sally L. Evans, age 92, of Red Bank, NJ peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 27th. Sally was the daughter of Shannon and Agnes Lees, and she was a life-long resident of Monmouth County, living in the Red Bank and Little Silver area for most of her life. Sally attended St. James School and Red Bank High School in the 1930’s, and she was very active with the Monmouth County SPCA and the Monmouth County Republican Women. She was the owner of Grossinger & Heller Insurance Company of Red Bank, NJ upon her retirement in 2011.

Donald Gustin Chamberlain (Churchill)

Donald Gustin Chamberlain (Churchill), of Hummelstown, PA formerly from Monmouth County, NJ, peacefully passed away on June 25th in Hummelstown, PA with his family at his side.

Born in Red Bank, NJ. The son of the late Harry and Guyla Chamberlain. He attended schools in Middletown, NJ graduating from MTHS in 1948. He also attended Rutgers University College of Agriculture. Donald was a member of Operating Engineer Local 825. He retired from the local 1992 as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He had a second career as Transportation coordinator for TD Bank in Tinton Falls, NJ, retiring in 2011 after 18 years.

Patricia M. Farrell (nee Murray)

Patricia M. Farrell (nee Murray) 79, of Little Silver, NJ, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Patricia was born in July of 1940 in Jersey City.  She met her husband Bob “down the shore” and after marriage, Pat and Bob settled in Leonia where they resided for 36 years and were parishioners of St John’s Catholic Church, they later moved to Little Silver. Pat was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School, Jersey City State University, BA, and Fordham University, MA. Pat was an educator at PS #8 in Jersey City for 35 plus years where she taught K-2nd, 7th and 8th grade, and eventually became the school’s guidance counselor. She was a passionate educator and loved her career at #8 as well as the people and students that she came in contact with along the way; many becoming lifelong friends.  Pat was a lifelong learner, avid reader, and passionate game player who brought her competitive spirit to every game. Pat loved her family, she cherished her role as sister, aunt, wife, mother and “Gigi.” Pat was a loyal friend. She will be missed by her family and her many friends.

Madeline McWhinney Dale

Madeline McWhinney Dale, a long time resident of Middletown, Little Silver and Manhattan passed away on June 19th. She was a trailblazer for women in the banking industry. Madeline was the first female Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank, the President of The First Women’s Bank and held numerous other leadership roles across a variety of fields during her long career.  

Madeline was born in Denver, CO in 1922 and is the oldest of seven children. After attending Graland Country Day School in Denver, founded by her father Leroy McWhinney, she went on to boarding school at Sandia School in Albuquerque, NM. She then came East to attend Smith College to pursue her ambition of entering the banking industry. She had wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father, an attorney and banker in Denver, who she lost tragically to a car accident when she was only 17. After graduating in 1943 Magna Cum Laude with an Economics degree, she went on to earn an MBA at NYU in 1947. She remained committed to NYU after graduating, completing additional coursework toward a PhD, serving as a visiting lecturer, member of the Advisory Board and President of the Alumni Association. She received the Meritorious Alumni Award in 1962 and was named “Man of the Year” in 1971. At NYU, she met her husband, John D. Dale, a management consultant and concert cellist, while he was completing his PhD. They married in 1961 and had one son. She is survived by her son Tom of Darien CT, his wife Lisa and her four grandchildren, Thomas Jr, William, Henry and Elizabeth, as well as her stepson, John Dale Jr and wife Clara of Middletown and Manhattan.

Arlene Drake Measley

Arlene Measley, wife and loving mother of 3, passed away quietly Friday morning, June 19th, at her home in Little Silver. Born in Elyria, Ohio, to Charles & Edith Drake, she was raised in Hammonton, NJ. After high school, she attended and graduated from Glassboro State College (Rowan University) where she had the unique honor of being the schools first Campus Queen (1948). She was also a member of the schools synchronized swim team, and was in Who’s Who in Americas Universities & Colleges. Following college, Arlene pursued a career as an elementary school teacher and raised her family in Fair Haven. Over the years she enjoyed her time traveling, bird watching and painting.

John Michael O'Keefe, Jr.

John Michael O'Keefe, Jr., 69, of Lincroft, NJ, passed away unexpectedly on June 5, 2020. Born in Jersey City, Jack moved to Keansburg at the age of eight and graduated from Middletown High School in 1968. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served two tours aboard the USS Benewah and USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. Jack was later awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Jack married Colleen Keelen O’Keefe on June 7, 1975, in Holmdel. He worked as a Longshoreman for ILA Local 1233 in Newark until retirement.

Jack was a patriotic American citizen and member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 12, the Elks Lodge #233, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4303, the American Legion #168, the National Rifle Association of America and the NJ State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs.

Jack enjoyed coin and baseball card collecting, the occasional ride on his Harley on the open road, and hunting until his final days. His love for sports included playing and coaching softball, watching college and high school football, and attending his grandkids’ games.

Alice F. Clark

Alice F. Clark, 83, of Little Silver passed away peacefully on June 5th.

Alice deeply loved her family and was an ongoing source of laughter, encouragement, and inspiration for all.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Jacqueline Feste, and her sister, Arline King. She is survived by her brother, Henry Feste, of Houston, TX, and her three children: Suzanne Scannell (and husband Rich) of Martinsville, NJ; John (Jack) Clark (and wife Mindy) of Audubon, PA; and David Clark (and wife Jennifer) of Green Brook, NJ. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Daniel (wife Christina) Scannell; Shaun Scannell; Emily (husband Andrei) Lacey; Lauren (husband Andrew) Cooper; and Gabriella Clark; and one great grandchild, Arthur Lacey; and her beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
