Obituaries

James Edward Gabriel was born at home to Helen and William McCahill.  Along with his six siblings, he grew up in Jersey City during the Great Depression. Obsessed with sports, Jim played sandlot ball and always remembered his many childhood friends. Jim attended Dickinson HS and St. Peter's Prep where he excelled in baseball and football. He loved jazz and Big Band music. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII in the South Pacific. Wounded at Tinian, he was awarded the Purple Heart. For 93 years, “The Old Marine” remained a true patriot. “Semper Fi”.

Jim held various full time jobs. After working at Ballantine brewery in Newark, NJ--a job he described as “heaven on earth”-- he worked as a BCI clerk for the Hudson County Sheriff’s office during the day and at the US Postal Service Bulk Center in the evenings.

Jim is predeceased by the love of his life, Mickey. Married for 44 years, Jim and Mickey were active parishioners of St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City. “Jimmy Fan” is survived by his younger sister, Agnes Harris of Warren, NJ; three daughters and sons-in-law who loved him very much: Nora and Michael Monaghan of Little Silver, Katie and Jack Redmond of Howell and Sheila and Tom Jurek of Little Silver, and his six grandchildren: Madelyn, Jimmy and Patrick Monaghan, Luke and Daniel Jurek and Shane Redmond. Attending the sporting events of his nephews, nieces and grandchildren was what “kept him young”.  Jim was a devoted brother, uncle, husband, father and grandparent. His spirit will live on whenever someone successfully executes “the hat trick” or sips a Black and Tan. PopPop passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 29, 2016.

James (“Jim”) Davidson Gilbert, Jr. – Loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on December 27, 2016 in Red Bank.

Jim was born in East Orange, NJ, the youngest son of James and Marguerite Gilbert.  He was raised in Glen Ridge, NJ and graduated from Glen Ridge High School in 1956.  It was there that he met the love of his life and future wife, Jean Curran. He was the co-captain of the Glen Ridge football team, and went on to play for Upsala College where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1960. After college, Jim enlisted in the Army Reserve and served six months active duty. Soon after, Jim and Jean were married in 1961.  Jim established a successful career in Sales that lasted 40 years; the last 25 of which were spent with the Grapek Company as a Sales Manager. During this time, Jim and Jean lovingly raised their 3 children (Jim, Laurie, and Tim) in Lincroft, New Jersey.

Joseph (Joey) G. Trail, 68, of Lincroft, NJ, passed away on December 26, 2016, at Riverview Medical Center.  Joey was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Mayer Trail and Clifford E. Trail, and his brother, Clifford M. Trail.  He is survived by his sister, Karen Trail.

Joey happily resided at Sunrise in Lincroft for the last several years, where he was treated with love and kindness.  Joey liked taking care of the animals at Sunrise, especially the dog, Mellow.  Joey was a kind soul who greeted everyone with a smile.  Special thanks to his family at Sunrise for their love and compassion.

Gloria Carmel Venezia (nee Valenti), 88, Red Bank, NJ passed away on December 20th, 2016 with her family and dear friends by her side.  She is survived by her son Michael J. Venezia, Jr. and his life partner, Karen Apy; daughter Regina Venezia-Walsh, son-in-law Douglas Walsh; and grandchildren:  Kevin and Michaela Venezia and Douglas Patrick Walsh.  She was predeceased by her parents, Carmela Arnone and Anthony Valenti.

Gloria was born in Red Bank, NJ, graduated from Red Bank High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Jersey State Teachers College. Gloria taught at St James Elementary School in Red Bank and married her loving husband in1949. She gave up her teaching career to raise her children and then became manager of numerous entrepreneurial endeavors with her husband including the Trade Winds Motel and Marina in Sea Bright, NJ; as manufacturer of electronic components from their Red Bank based McVen Electronics Laboratory; and, more recently, as proprietor of their beloved junk shop, the Venezia Emporium.  Gloria was also a globe-trotter who lived in Japan and travelled throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  Her favorite trips were those to visit relatives in Italy and Sicily and her pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
 

Charles John Arliss, 90, of Locust, died peacefully at home December 17.  He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary Kay.

Charlie was born in Newark, to the late Charles and Elizabeth (O'Connor) Arliss.  After graduating from Barringer High School, he served his country during World War II, in the United States Army Air Corps.   After leaving the service, he enrolled at the University of Vermont, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.  He graduated with a degree in business, and then did graduate work at Columbia Business School.  His next stop was Wall Street, where he spent his entire career working for Salomon Brothers, in New York.

In 1950, he married Mary Kay Gilbertson, and they began raising their family shortly thereafter.  They eventually settled in Locust, in 1961, where they resided for the rest of their lives.

John T. Toohey died Friday, December 9, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, Florence and John P. Toohey; a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Chris Bradley; and a son-in-law, Vincent DiFazio.

John was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and Fordham University. He and his family moved from Staten Island to Lincroft, New Jersey in 1972. He worked in the insurance industry all his life and retired from AIG in 1994. After retirement, he and his wife vacationed in South Carolina for ten years. They settled in Shady Oaks in Red Bank, NJ in 2003.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen, and his five children: John (and wife Connie) Toohey of Lusby MD, Patricia DiFazio (and Gus Wadsworth) of Center Valley PA, Daniel (and wife Laurie) Toohey of Lincroft NJ, Lisa Toohey of Fair Haven NJ, and Kelley Toohey Maul of Oceanport NJ. He is also survived by his brother Gerard, sister-in-law Marie, and many nieces and nephews. The delights of his life were his ten grandchildren: Joseph (and wife Toni), Liane, John, Gina, Dana, Lauren, Jack, Leah, Jake, and Scott.

Mary Ann Lettieri, Age 86, passed away on December 8, 2016.  She was born in Indiana, PA and moved to Red Bank in 1948.  She was a communicant of Saint Catherine’s Catholic Church, Middletown.

Mary Ann worked for the Dept of the Army at Ft. Monmouth for 35 years.  She belonged to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites; volunteering at Christian Brothers in Lincroft.

William Edward Howarth, Sr. passed away, peacefully, on Tuesday,  November 29th, 2016.  Born in Bayonne, Bill lived most of his life in Jersey City until moving to Lincroft in 2004.

He was predeceased by his parents, Grace Lutier and David Howarth, his brother David, and his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Bridget Coleman. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served during WWII. He worked at Lightolier for 47 years.
Bill liked to dance with his bride, bowl, and spend time in his carpentry shop. Bill was a gentle soul with a wicked sense of humor.

Margaret Healy McNulty known as “Peg” died at Riverview Hospital on November 30th at the age of 87 after a brief illness.

Peg was born in Buffalo, New York, the second of four children of Dr. J. Nelson and Kathryn Healy.  After graduating Holy Angels Academy, she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cornell University in 1951.  She married Herbert W. McNulty, Jr. on September 22, 1956.  After briefly residing in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, the McNulty’s moved to the Rumson Fair Haven area in 1959 to raise three children, Bill, Bob and Kate.  Upon Herb’s passing, Peg moved to the Alderbrook Condominiums and finally to the Atrium at Navesink Harbor in 2011.

In 1977 Peg began what was to be a 30 year residential real estate career first working with Four Seasons, then with Jean Burgdorff and finally with Gloria Nilson. This work brought her great satisfaction and at the age of 80 she decided it was probably a good time to retire.  All who knew Peg professionally thought of her as an honest and hardworking advocate for her clients.

Kay A. Havens (Koon), 80, of Red Bank, NJ, passed away on 11/30/2016. Kay was born in Ohio and lived in New York, Wisconsin and Montclair, NJ before moving to Red Bank, NJ several years ago. Kay's greatest accomplishment was in obtaining her Real Estate license, and she worked for many years, at Coldwell Banker, in Upper Montclair NJ.

Kay was predeceased by her brother, Norman, her mother, Martha, and her father Norman ("Duke"). Kay is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Margie Havens, her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Debbie Havens, and her daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Dan Thomas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jonathan (and Niki), Daniel (and Cristina), Shannon, Samantha, Dylan and Daniel, and great granddaughters Ally and Maddy.

Kay loved life, she loved to laugh and have a good time, and loved her friends as much as her family. This is evident in any photo ever taken of her. Kay will be truly missed. A special thanks to her most recent family at Wesleyan Arms, in Red Bank, where she had many supportive and caring friends.
