Obituaries

John “Jack” Gilbert, age 73, was born in Irvington, NJ to John and Marie Gilbert.  He passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 after a long battle with cancer.  Jack graduated Irvington High School in 1961.  He attended college in Boston.  He went on to proudly serve with the US Navy, during the Vietnam War on the USS Willis A. Lee from 1961-1966.  He then went on to own his own IT consulting and computer programming company.  At the end of his career, he consulted for K.B.W. in New York City.  He retired in 1988.   In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved being outdoors.  

Jack is survived by Salvatore and MacKenzie Giorgio of Oakhurst, NJ; as well as a host of cousins and friends.

Susan Karlin, most recently of Red Bank NJ, died on October 12, 2016 at the age of 93.   She was born Susan O’Gorman in Montclair, NJ where she lived until the end of World War II. From her very early years she spent summers in Westhampton Beach, NY where her family had a second home.  She graduated from the Kimberley School in 1941 and during the war was a volunteer at Mountainside Hospital. In March of 1945 she married Stuart Leigh of South Orange, NJ, a Navy pilot.  His employment took them to Reading, PA, Wellesley, MA and Morristown, NJ. By 1953 they were living in New Vernon, NJ raising their three children and a succession of golden and labrador retrievers.  Stuart died in a commercial air disaster in December 1960.  Around this time a friend introduced her to the art of decoupage, which she practiced for the next 50 years.  A tennis player into her 86th year, she met her second husband, Dr. John E. Karlin, when he became one of her tennis partners. They married in July of 1963.  Dr. Karlin’s work at Bell Laboratories led them to move from New Vernon to Locust, NJ in 1966. Here they found a few acres of wooded land on Wigwam Road perfectly situated with a view across the Navesink River toward the Oceanic Bridge and the setting sun; and here they built their home.  On these tranquil acres Susan expressed her natural creativity in landscape gardening, decoupage and above all in caring for her family.

Frank Waldron, of Shadow Lake Village, died surrounded by his family on Oct 18th.  

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Regina; his children Frank, Regina, Patricia, Thomas, Elizabeth; their spouses and his six grandchildren.

Richard Walter Seuffert, “Dick”, age 89 of Middletown, passed away on Oct 17th, 2016 at his home.  Born in Newark to Joseph and Irene, he was the youngest of three sons. Dick attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark and after serving in the U.S Navy during World War II, as a seaman aboard the USS Endicott, he graduated from Seton Hall University. Like his father Dick became a professional Firefighter in Newark and served with Engine Co. 9 for several years.  During his summer months, he was a professional lifeguard in Belmar.

Called back into service during the Korean War, he served briefly on the USS Wisconsin and then was stationed in French Morocco with his wife Dolores.  Dick was known as one of the “Tin Can Sailors”.  After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Dick was hired as the Assistant City Manager for Newark, then as the first full-time Business Administrator for Middletown, and then City Manager for Rockaway Township.  Dick also served as Vice President of Business Operations at Snyder-Westerland Co. in Atlantic Highlands. Before retiring, he finished his career as a consultant for the Middletown Township Planning Commission.

Richard was an active member of St Catharine’s Church in Holmdel. He was an avid supporter of St. Benedict’s Preparatory school and attended their reunions on a regular basis.

Michael G. Douglass, 55, of Long Branch, passed away after a fierce battle with cancer, on October 15, 2016, at the home of his sister.  Michael was the youngest child of the long-time Red Bank Douglass Family.  He was a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School, Class of 1979.  

Michael was predeceased by his father John E. Douglass III, mother Margaret Severs Douglass and brother Robert B. Douglass.  He is survived by his brothers John E. Douglass IV (MaryAnn), Dennis M. Douglass (Patricia) and George W. Douglass (Joanne); his sister Maggie M. Waite (JR); and his eight nephews and a niece.

Pamela Lea Chappell, 64, of Wall, left us on Oct 14, 2016, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, after a long and hard fought battle with complications from cancer.  Pam was born in Long Branch, and was a lifelong Monmouth County resident.  She graduated from Wilson School, Neptune City (1966), Neptune High School (1970), and attended St Francis College, Loretto, PA.  Two of her avocations were certified massage therapist and licensed nail technician. Pam had a long career of service: as an operator, then business rep for NJ Bell, then Verizon, retiring in 1987. She was Director of Constituent Services for former Assemblyman Steve Corodemus for nine years.  She served in several capacities for Monmouth County: as Right to Know Coordinator for the Health Department, in the Environmental section of The Planning Board, and as Admin Assistant to the late freeholder Tom Powers, and most recently, as Admin Assistant for Freeholder Lillian Burry, and secretary to the County Construction Board of Appeals. Pam was an excellent writer, and would write an ad, article, press release or speech with the best of them.  A lifelong Republican, Pam donated thousands of volunteer hours for the Monmouth County GOP, and was a member of the Monmouth Federation of Republican Women, The Affiliated Republican Club, and the Neptune City and Wall GOP clubs for over 30 years.  She had been an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church for many years.  Pam was a voracious reader, and enjoyed sewing, gemology, gardening, and loved the many dogs and cats she cared for over the years. Her loyalty, kindness, friendship, selflessness, and good humor will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
 

Gordon F. Glover, son of Barbara Smith Glover and the late Rolfe Eldridge Glover III, died suddenly of natural causes on September 27, 2016, at age 53. Originally from Washington, D.C., he was a graduate of Georgetown Day School and the University of Pennsylvania, and worked as an independent management consultant. For the past fourteen years, in partnership with his wife, he ran a wealth-consultancy firm in the Red Bank area. Gordon considered his family his greatest accomplishment, and was a devoted husband and father. He shared his sense of adventure, quick wit, and love of cooking and gardening with his family and a close-knit circle of friends.

In addition to his mother Barbara, of the Washington, D.C. area, Gordon is survived by his wife of eighteen years, Priscilla Schroy Glover, and their two beloved children, James, 13, and Parson, 10, as well as his brother, Rolfe Glover IV, and his sister, Katherine Glover Quinlan, as well as five nieces and a nephew, Cristina, Sarah, Molly, Sophia, and Rolfe V.

James Craig Leidner of New York City died Thursday morning, October 6, 2016 after a motor vehicle accident in New Jersey.  Craig was born  in Marshalltown, Iowa. His mother, Elizabeth Craig Leidner of New York City, and his father, Thomas Leidner, of Brunswick, ME, as well as his sister, Durie Leidner Lynch and brother, Thomas W. Leidner II, and their children survive him.  His grandparents, Nanette and James Craig, of Fair Haven, and Ida and Thomas Leidner preceded him in death.

Craig spent portions of his childhood in New York City, Charlottesville, Virginia and Fair Haven, New Jersey.  Craig attended Brookdale Community College. He was passionate about sports, especially basketball and soccer, and worked as an ardent soccer referee in the Red Bank area. He also was a talented cook and worked as a chef. His family will miss him greatly, especially his sense of humor, his amusing impersonations, and wonderful laugh among many other attributes.

Harry W.  Lockwood, 71 of Oceanport died Friday Oct 7,2016 at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees NJ. Born in Staten Island  NY, Harry was a long time resident of Oceanport. He was an operator for the Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority in Monmouth  Beach . Harry was a communicant of Church of The Precious Blood Monmouth  Beach . Harry had many  friends, but had a special bond with his friends from "Harry’s Hide Away".

Harry is survived by his brothers, Jim and his wife Karen Lockwood of Corolla NC, and David and his wife Jessica Lockwood of Leonardo (Middletown Twp), sisters Sue Ellen and her husband Fred Tisot of Medford NJ, Marlene Bjorklund of Staten Island, and his sister in law Theresa Lockwood of Middletown. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who fondly referred to him as "Uncle Buck".

Donna M. (Bezyack) Paynton, 56 of Wall Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2016, surrounded by family. She showed hope and courage in her tenacious fight against pancreatic cancer.

Donna is survived by her cherished husband and dedicated caregiver Bud, her beloved and loving sons Matthew and Ryan, a devoted sister Lori, a supportive brother Michael, as well as numerous family and friends.

Donna was kind, compassionate and loving.  Her radiant smile could light up any room. Donna was a stay at home mother who decided to pursue her dream of becoming a registered nurse. She began working as an EMT at Monoc Medical Services. After graduating as an RN from Brookdale Nursing School, she went to work at Bay Shore Hospital in the ER.  Most recently she worked for The Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey in The Keansburg Community Health Center. Donna has positively impacted many people on a personal and professional level throughout her entire life. Her selflessness and dedication to helping others will never be forgotten.
