Obituaries

Richard L. "Pop-Pop" Bennett SR, 88 of Fair Haven, passed away after a brief illness on February 28, 2018 at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank. He was born at Riverview Hospital, Red Bank, "when it was a house".  Richard was a lifelong resident of the Two River area and would frequently comment how much he enjoyed growing up there, especially with sailing memories on the Navesink River, as well as lifeguarding at Ship Ahoy and Sandlass Beach Club. He attended Rumson Fair Haven High School, and graduated Red Bank Regional High School. He attended the Peddie School as well as Bucknell University. He retired as president of the J.C. Williams Outdoor Advertising Company in Asbury Park.

Edmund (Ed) E. Matejczyk, 67 of Sea Bright, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 18 at Monmouth Medical Long Branch.  Ed was born in Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales, GB, the Son of the late Peter and Hilda (Ellard) Matejczyk.  Raised in Rumson, he graduated from Rumson Fair Haven High School.  He was well known in the area for his honesty, reliability and admirable dock building skills.

Ed loved his Chris Craft Dory and going on fishing trips.  He enjoyed horse racing, watching the NY Giants and golfing with friends.  Ed had a passion for cooking and loved to whip up amazing meals for all.

Laverne Haase age 87, was called Home to join her late husband Edward Haase Jr, on February 19, 2018. Laverne was born in Washington, Missouri to Viola and John Breeden. She was one of seven children. While working in St. Louis as a registered nurse, Laverne met the love of her life. Ed swept her off her feet to Fairfield Connecticut, where they raised their four children. Her strong sense of family and welcoming way, made it easy for her children’s friends to call the Haase residence there second home. Laverne loved to cook, bake pies for a local restaurant, throw parties, play cards and always looked forward to the family summer road trips. 

After her children were grown, she and Ed moved back to Missouri. Laverne coveted family time, playing bingo, going to the riverboat casinos and just sitting around a table talking and laughing for hours on end.

Rumson – Rosalie C. Ramsey, 102, passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2018.  Rosalie was the daughter of George and Amelia Christie. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and the Church of the Nativity. 

Rosalie was a member of the Rumson Garden Club, the Rumson Country Club, the Seabright Beach Club and the Seabright Lawn, Tennis & Cricket Club.  She was an avid bridge player.

Dorothy Cumming Scott, 82 of Irmo, South Carolina died on February 10, 2018. She was born in New York City and lived in Rumson and Little Silver, New Jersey for 73 years before moving to South Carolina in 2008.

“Dotsie” was a graduate of the Rumson Country Day School, Rumson, NJ, the Garrison Forest School, Garrison, MD, and the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, MA.  After graduation she was employed by Raymond Lowey, an industrial design firm in New York City.  After raising two children, the Point Road School in Little Silver, NJ hired her as a teacher’s assistant for ten years.

Barbara Zambotti Mallin, 64, passed away at Riverview Medical Center on February 16, 2018, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Born and raised in Johnstown, PA to Guido and Anna Zambotti, Barbara moved to Long Branch, NJ following her graduation magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Barbara met her husband while they were both studying for their MBA’s from Monmouth University. She began her career at Fort Monmouth in 1975, where she stayed for nearly 40 years before retiring in 2015. Barbara, her husband of 32 years, Raemon, and their two children, Andrew and Jeremy have been a part of the Ocean Township community since 1992. Barbara loved spending hot, sunny days at the beach in Loch Arbor when she wasn’t tending to her beautiful gardens, cheering for the NY Giants and the NY Yankees or spoiling her beloved granddaughter, Lila.

Josephine F. Menna, of Red Bank, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2018.  Josie was born in Long Branch to Joseph and Dolores Ferrogine and has lived in Red Bank for the past 67 years.  She was a retired hairdresser and homemaker who was very involved in the community and St. Anthony of Padua Church.  Josie was a Past President of St. Anthony’s PTA, a Past Treasurer of the Regional Diocese PTA for three years, she volunteered at Riverview Medical Center, was Secretary of St. Ann’s Society and chaired the cancer drive and helped with the heart and leukemia drives and in 1992 she was the President of St. Ann’s Service Associated Sisters of Lucy Filipini ASLF.

Marsh A. Bryan, 84 of Little Silver, passed away peacefully, surrounded by lots of family, on February 13, 2018.  He was an insurance broker with Johnson and Higgins in NYC and also enjoyed owning ABC Sports of Little Silver, NJ.

He attended Rumson Country Day School, St. Bernards, Pomfret School and graduated from Princeton in 1955.  He was a former member of the Rumson Country Club, Sea Bright Lawn Tennis & Cricket Club, the Key Largo Anglers Club and  the Sea Bright Beach Club.   His favorite activities were skiing, golf, fishing, rowing, bridge and tennis. 

Dr. Hiroshi Iwamaye, M.D., OB-GYN, passed away peacefully at home on February 13, 2018, following his courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Iwamaye was born in Wakayama, Japan and grew up in Southern California.  He was the oldest child of Mitsuhiro Frank Iwamaye and Hideko Iwamaye (nee Matsumoko).

He graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1967, received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California Los Angeles in 1971, and received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in 1975.  

With great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Verne E. Chaney, the founder of Dooley Intermed International, Inc. and decorated Korean War battalion surgeon. 

A graduate of Virginia Military Academy and Johns Hopkins University, at age 27 Verne Chaney enlisted in the Army the day after the Korean War started, becoming one of the most decorated medical doctors during the Korean War. Serving as a battalion surgeon in MASH and frostbite clinics, Dr. Chaney was wounded in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge in Korea while working his way through a minefield with a bayonet in an effort to save three wounded medics.  He was awarded the Silver Star for Gallantry, and a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and French Croix de Guerre for his heroism.
